Newsspot – In China, Human Costs Are Built Into An iPad

Well, here I am again! This evening’s been quite dry, in my opinions, and all I’ve been doing is playing Jetpack Joyride (get it, if you haven’t got it already), and reading up on the news. This article caught my attention though, seeing as it was on the front page, and also because it had the word ‘iPad’ in the title. I have to admit it brought many things to light for me, and it also made me pretty distraught to see that the big companies still tolerated this kind of working conditions. You can see the first part of the article below, as normal, and the link to the actual page can be found underneath. Enjoy!

In China, Human Costs Are Built Into an iPad

The explosion ripped through Building A5 on a Friday evening last May, an eruption of fire and noise that twisted metal pipes as if they were discarded straws.

When workers in the cafeteria ran outside, they saw black smoke pouring from shattered windows. It came from the area where employees polished thousands of iPad cases a day.

Two people were killed immediately, and over a dozen others hurt. As the injured were rushed into ambulances, one in particular stood out. His features had been smeared by the blast, scrubbed by heat and violence until a mat of red and black had replaced his mouth and nose.

“Are you Lai Xiaodong’s father?” a caller asked when the phone rang at Mr. Lai’s childhood home. Six months earlier, the 22-year-old had moved to Chengdu, in southwest China, to become one of the millions of human cogs powering the largest, fastest and most sophisticated manufacturing system on earth. That system has made it possible for Apple and hundreds of other companies to build devices almost as quickly as they can be dreamed up.

“He’s in trouble,” the caller told Mr. Lai’s father. “Get to the hospital as soon as possible.”

In the last decade, Apple has become one of the mightiest, richest and most successful companies in the world, in part by mastering global manufacturing. Apple and its high-technology peers — as well as dozens of other American industries — have achieved a pace of innovation nearly unmatched in modern history.

However, the workers assembling iPhones, iPads and other devices often labor in harsh conditions, according to employees inside those plants, worker advocates and documents published by companies themselves. Problems are as varied as onerous work environments and serious — sometimes deadly — safety problems.

Employees work excessive overtime, in some cases seven days a week, and live in crowded dorms. Some say they stand so long that their legs swell until they can hardly walk. Under-age workers have helped build Apple’s products, and the company’s suppliers have improperly disposed of hazardous waste and falsified records, according to company reports and advocacy groups that, within China, are often considered reliable, independent monitors.

More troubling, the groups say, is some suppliers’ disregard for workers’ health. Two years ago, 137 workers at an Apple supplier in eastern China were injured after they were ordered to use a poisonous chemical to clean iPhone screens. Within seven months last year, two explosions at iPad factories, including in Chengdu, killed four people and injured 77. Before those blasts, Apple had been alerted to hazardous conditions inside the Chengdu plant, according to a Chinese group that published that warning.

“If Apple was warned, and didn’t act, that’s reprehensible,” said Nicholas Ashford, a former chairman of the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health, a group that advises the United States Labor Department. “But what’s morally repugnant in one country is accepted business practices in another, and companies take advantage of that.”

I’m gonna be off this for now, so I think it’s safe to call it a day for this blogging addict. You’ll hopefully get more posts tomorrow though, so stay tuned. Oh, and George? You really need to open those emails and actually comment… >_>

Alex Out!

The Evening Post – Issue 12

You know what? For once in my life, I’ve been right! The day went as well as expected. Well, excluding my headache from screaming children and dehydration, it did. It went as normal till around 17:00 really. You know, work, blog, twitter, foursquare, cook, play with little sister, and there my normal day ended. The abnormal thing that happened today, seeing as it isn’t a regular occurrence, was that Mum decided to take me with her to her fitness classes which she hosts. That, combined with a pounding headache, didn’t do me well, but I got through in the end, and here I am!

If i had to pick a highlight out of my day, however, I would choose playing with my sister and her friend. The former requested that we would dress up to be different things, so that I could take pictures of us dressed as whatever we chose. Rubie, being the pretty little pink girl she is, dressed up as a princess, to no surprise. Her friend, on the other hand, had dressed as a fake Ezio Auditore from Assassin’s Creed II, although he did try and get as close to the original as possible. And me? Well I decided to go orginal, and totally Alex style with the classis ‘I’m from the future’ look. Complete with glasses, duffle coat, and gloves too! The smaller ones did eventually persuade me to come over to more ancient days, and after some rummaging around, I found my old green cloak from when I was 7-8. I have to admit, I still like it. After a few photos, we decided to call it a day, and removed our totally rad (and by rad, I mean nubbish (noob like)) disguises, and collapsed on the sofa. You see (and I loathe to admit it), I’m not the most active person out there, and although I weigh just 8 stone, and look like a 2D image, my fitness levels aren’t what they should be, and so after taking a few action shots, I was totally zoned out. This did have one good perk though, as I got to catch up on some Wall Street Journalvideos, and New York Times articles.

The New York Times Building

I have to say, compared to english news, Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and the New York Times (NYT) totally blow us out the water. The news is relevant, and the channels/categories are suited to what you’re interested in. Take the BBC for example. I like to catch up on UK news occasionally, but most of the times, the news isn’t really what I want to hear, and since most of the news is consolidated into one channel, it isn’t really appealing for me. The WSJ, on the other hand, have quite a few options, from what I’ve seen, and I mostly stick to the 2012 campaign channel, and the News Hub channel. As for newspapers, I just find that the NYT has a better variety and layout than the UK newspapers. Even the app for the NYT easily beats the english. Don’t get me wrong, I’d happily get the Guardian app or The Times app, but it doesn’t have the same sharing, reading, or even layout features. The Guardian app for iPad, on the other hand, is a different story. It has the most beautiful metro interface, and the editions are well laid out, and even compete with the NYT’s simplicity. What I don’t get is why they have a separate app for both devices, and how one is amazing, and the other not-so. But really, what can I say? They’re both two really different papers, as the news in america is drastically different from that of the UK. I just think that we could be doing better.

The Evening Post – Issue 9

My oh my! It seems as if I have left all you readers without a decent post for a whole week! Well then that must change and what better time to change that situation other than now! I shan’t bother to fill you in on the last seven days since that would take too long and I’m short for time as it is so I’ll give you the last two days of my life instead…

Tuesday was an exciting day. I went to the Wildside Centre with my friends George, Liam, Luke, Myles and Georgia. We started out going for a walk in which on several occasions George’s little brother, Henry, attempted to stab me with blunt twigs but to no avail. Our aim was to collect and make a mosaic to remind us of the colours of spring on a small pallet of paper that we were given just before we began. After completing this task we were introduced to an artistic challenge where we had to gather twelve twigs to make a picture or art sculpture on the floor. Me and George teamed up and, with 24 twigs, created a excellent TeePee. This project was then shortly followed by another in which we had to build a birds nest. Since me and George like extremes we built the largest one which could withstand the weight of a human! After this we left back and did some drawing. Whilst drawing Georgia decided to run off and, as a result, I had to chase her and bring her back to a supervised area. Unfortunately after this we didn’t stay for long and soon had to leave out to fetch Rubie, much to my dismay.

After my keyboard lesson and my trek to pathfinders we were given the task of checking tents. We did most of them before I left and I was also given the burden of taking control of the Bible Study on Friday since we didn’t finish the topic of the Holy Trinity. I was also confronted with the fact that we didn’t have enough money for my camping trip which, to be honest, I was very pleased with. Shortly after this my Tuesday decided to end…so I shall continue on with today…

Today saw a new beginning in my productivity. I’ve finally been getting my tasks done, making a decent amount of progress in my work and finally have all my weeks planned out so I get enough free time for myself also. Most of today, after my work of course, was spent at the park in which many pictures were taken, some of which I will include in this post. After a while, since I had to get back home for keyboard practice, I left at record pace back home only to find out that I had left my keyboard book at pathfinders! I was stuck with what to do until Rubie mentioned that she wanted me to play with her outside and I remembered the state of the garden. Now our garden was very neat at one stage, but, as everything eventually does, it got neglected and so I put upon myself the task of mowing, trimming and cleaning the expanse of grass that is now a very tidy garden. It took at least three hours, I’ll admit that, but overall it was worth it and, as I look over other people’s gardens in our neighbourhood I can proudly say that ours just may be the tidiest in all of Bushbury. Overall this Wednesday has been one of work and heat and I’m glad to be indoors for once with my windows wide open for the evening. That’s all for today but, before I go, I would like to leave you with two things. One of which are the pictures below and also a question. If the brain sends electrical impulses to our body then I would like to ask this: What volume of electricity does the brain send, what is the resistance to electricity of the membrane and, if used, how many volts are required to push the current through the membrane?

The Morning Mail – Issue 5

Hi everyone. Sorry I didn’t post anything yesterday or the evening before so I’ll start  from where I left off.

After I had created my mouth-watering flapjacks I just generally chilled and spent most of my time inspecting the produce until the evening when we took out Rubies birthday cake and let her blow out the candles. The rest of the evening was, to say the least, dry and uneventful so there’s not much to talk about to I’ll skip to when I got to Aston the next day for the NEC Youth Day if that’s ok.

When we arrived after our 30 minute journey I was greeted by some friends who had come also. We made our way to the doors and handed our tickets in before finding our way to the auditorium where we would be spending most of our day. I have to say the stands where we sat did look and feel rather flimsy but I decided to keep those thoughts out of my mind. Rhiannon, on the other hand, decided to become paranoid of our current situation and seemed to think that any sudden movement could bring instant death to us all. After a long length of time, comments, talking and successfully keeping Brynmawr and Phumi awake throughout the length of the service we were given a lunch break and were told to meet back at 4:15. For lunch we travelled to Newtown and, after eating and hear Rhiannon moan about her dad, returned to Aston for even more painful lectures. When we returned we chose some seats and sat down as the afternoon service started. I can’t remember much since most of the time I wasn’t paying attention but I quickly perked up when hearing the names Bill Gates and Steve Jobs although I don’t know why they were mentioned. As I looked across to see what my peers were up to I saw Phumi attempting to multitask Twitter and sleeping but I reckon she couldn’t manage to do both and saw Rhiannon reading stories on FanFic as she normally does. I did try to read along because I sometimes read but she neglected me the privilege of doing so and ignored me for most of the day after that apart from hitting me every so often for no given reason. Brynmawr arrived about halfway through the service so at least I had someone to stop me from being so bored. The rest of the service seemed to slip by and, to me, only seemed to last half an hour but I was glad anyway and didn’t bother mentioning this in case he (being Jeffery Rosario) carried on speaking. I don’t mind people speaking for long lengths of time as long as it’s something interesting or something that I’m interested in and, to put it bluntly, I’m not exactly interested in standing out like Paul. Soon after he finished speaking I found myself walking to the car park but it was a while before we left since Phumi’s brother seems to know a large amount of people and tries to catch up on life stories in a space of five minutes. After I had arrived at my destination I was quite tired and, as a result, didn’t have time to post anything and went straight to bed.

So that was two night ago and yesterdays summary but what is in store for me today? The answer is nothing. I was going to visit my cousin but I doubt anything will happen since I haven’t arranged anything so I’ll more that likely be in for the day. It’s not all bad news though, you never know, I might make more flapjacks! I might post another video and photo if I get time but until then, 再見!

Edit: Sorry! I forgot to leave you guys with a question that was on my mind! Argh. Anyway, here it is: If the earth is round then is everything that is on the earth slightly rounded also? Because if a square was completely square not to earth dimensions it, in theory, would balance slightly on the floor instead of being flat. Has everything got a slight curve or is it an illusion of the eye?
