Quote of The Day – Winston Churchill

You know, I was wondering what to put today, seeing as I actually like putting up quotes for you guys to look at, and I thought about all the mistakes that people make, and thought ‘Hey, I wonder if Winston Churchill ever said anything about mistakes?’. I was surprisingly right! So, saying nothing more, here’s todays quote:

It is a mistake to look too far ahead. Only one link of the chain of destiny can be handled at a time. – Winston Churchill

Well, I’ll leave you to mull this quote over your breakfast, and figure it out yourself. ;)

Tweet of The Day – Oxygen And Helium

Standard

So, here’s our tweet of the day from @Laughbook, telling us those niggling little questions that we all have. This one is personally my favorite from them, and until I go on Wikipedia and find out why it’s wrong, it always will be.

@Laughbook: What if Oxygen makes our voice really deep…. And Helium just brings it back to normal?

Newsspot – Into The Heart Of Lightness

Standard

So, just before I retire from my computer desk, I thought I’d share this post with you from The New York Times. I found it rather fascinating, and I hope you do too. Here’s a snippet from the story, with a link underneath:

Into the Heart of Lightness

Doug Gates/Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

Doug Wheeler’s installation “DW 68 VEN MCASD 11” (1968-2011), in San Diego.

By
Published: January 15, 2012

THE artist Doug Wheeler tells two stories, both having to do with light, that go a long way toward explaining why he is so revered by many fellow artists — as a visionary and a relentlessly stubborn perfectionist — and also why his work has been seen by so few American artgoers over the last few decades, particularly those in New York.

The first story takes place at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, where several years ago Mr. Wheeler created a complex installation he calls an “infinity environment,” featuring a light-saturated, all-white, rounded room with no corners or sharp angles, rendering viewers unable to fix their eyes on any surface. It invokes an experience of light itself as an almost tactile presence. As Mr. Wheeler continued to tweak the piece, a small boy walked up to the room and hesitated before entering, putting his hands in front of him because his senses told him that the square entrance was a wall, not simply a wall of light flooding his vision.

“I thought, ‘O.K., I can stop worrying so much and being mad about them letting people in too early,’ ” Mr. Wheeler said recently over coffee at the David Zwirner gallery in Chelsea, where he has just opened his first solo New York gallery show at the age of 72, remaking a cavernous interior into a kind of immaculate white vacuum tube — the city’s first infinity environment.

Dear Reader

Standard

Now listen up, reader. I don’t know what you’re hear for or why you came to my blog but if you’ve already read down to here then either you’re bored and stumbled upon this page by accident or you’re one of my regular peeps who get my posts on the mail. So, to all you new, wannabe readers: Hey there! To read up on me (no I don’t have a Wiki on my life yet) go to the about page to find out about my life background, experiences and interests. It may help you understand some of my posts. To all my regular (subliminal reference to The Regular Show intended) followers: Welcome back! I’ve missed you so much you wouldn’t believe it! I was thinking of going emo. Any thoughts/objections? No, I don’t have nachos, by the way. Anyway, enough of the introductions, let’s sift the determined post readers from the saps who can’t read more than ten lines of HTML code…although you’re not viewing that anyway…If you’ve already read down to here, by the way, then keep going. Good things come to those who wait…and food always comes to those who love to cook (Ratatouille reference intended).

So. You made it down here? Impressive! You, dear reader, are obviously not as easily fooled as I thought! I guess you have a bog enough screen to see the entire post anyway. Cheater. Next time I play you in a game of Carcassonne I will show you what it’s like to lose. Anyway, enough with my meaningless drivel…although I am told by certain sources that that’s all I ever speak anyway…let me begin to parse, construe, define, interpret and…oh to hell with the thesaurus I’ll never get through all those words…*sigh*…I’ll just outline my day to you…alright? Well then…what are you waiting for?! Read the next chapter already! I don’t type my day out to have you ignore it and read my meaningless type! See! You’re still reading! Fine. You know what. I’ll just start the paragraph myself!

Today was somewhat interesting…to say the most (no that was not a typo) and, for all those who didn’t deduce the meaning of that backwards phrase…my day was, to put it bluntly, boring until around 9pm. My day started of as usual with the 6am wake-up alarm, breakfast at 10am call and all the motherly nags in-between. A guaranteed headache ensued after the last one. So I spent most of my day indoors going delirious thinking it was Tuesday and even got ready for Pathfinders! I eventually came back to Monday from my trip to the future and realised how little I had done most of the day. I started being productive and updated you guys with a well deserved post as you experienced veteran readers will know and also got some animation done. I also got down to 32 applications! Go me! The pictures are below…but don’t skip! You cant cheat! You’ve got to read the rest of the post first you lazy, good-for-nohing Cheetah! What did I say earlier if you were paying attention?! Good things come to those who wait! Get it in your head! Anyway, fast-forwarding at the speed of light to 9pm: I had an interesting discussion with Sadia and Kadijah over Twitter in which I mostly sat on the sidelines of whilst they talked about beans, which types on beans they were, something about toning and muscles (why does my spell checker correct that to Toni & Guy?!) and various other things of which I refused to take part in, lest I look as insane, unhinged, psychotic and psychopathic as they did…which would forever tarnish my public name. Unfortunately our 14 year-old Kadijah had stayed up past her bedtime and had to go, effectively killing the conversation (she’s known for her brutality) and leaving me and Sadia all alone. Needless to say I decided to write this post at that point and that is what I am (for me) and have (for the reader) doing (for me) and done (for the reader). I have to admit you’re really persistent in reading my post! If you’ve made it this far then go grab a beer and celebrate! Just kidding! Stay here you’re underage. Go get a cookie instead…

I now present to you the three meaningless facts of the day! Whoop!

1) I need new draws!

2) I often play life like I would Assassin’s Creed but with no ‘desynchronisation’ fallback…

3) My deja-vu always revolves around one person since I’ve met them…and from what I can tell and have taken part in during my dreams I think it’s safe to say I have a 90% chance of being married to that person by the time I’m 21.

God-Dangit reader! You weren’t meant to get this far! Didn’t your mother tell you to keep prying eyes off other people information?! That seems highly unlikely if you’re still reading on! I mean, come on! It’s not like I’m sneaking another chapter of meaningless nonsense to wind you up and waste your time down here! Oh no that would be highly unacceptable! Against my own moral code, in fact! Seriously though why are you still here? Go have that beer I told you about…scrap that grab some coffee. I need some too, to be honest. Hey! Don’t get that coffee yet! If you get two make sure you make one straight black coffee with 5 blocks of sugar! Don’t stir it! Yes I know I’m unhealthy having straight black coffee but what can I say? It keeps me awake on important projects for people and whatnot. Anyway it’s about time I closed this post…I’ll kind of do it now…ASAP even…I like that acronym…anyone else like it? Yeah I know it’s too cool to be described! That’s why you’re speechless! Ah I love it when I type to myself and no-one answers back :’) No annoying popups get in the way *happy sniffle*. Serious now though I’m closing the post..so LEAVE!

In the famous words of T.T:

Bless your face. If you coughed or sneezed during the reading of this article then bless you.

Peace Off!

iOS 5 & Site Changes

Standard

After being housebound for the entire day due to sickness (blame the weather) I decied to give my blog the once-over and finally finish updating my iPod to iOS 5 with a tethered Jailbreak.

First of all, the blog. I know many of you won’t be able to utilise the changes made but I decided to enable the ‘onswipe’ feature and create a iPad friendly app-like safari alternative to the original site. If you do have an iPad you should be viewing it right now. Secondly, I decided to use my logo instead of an ‘S’ as the website icon so you may notice that change since that goes for all users. Those are the only changes I’ve made so far today and hopefully there won’t be any more.

Now then, iOS 5. It took me a while to decide between a tethered Jailbreak and no battery percentage and a fully working iOS 4.3.3 with no notification center and addons…the choice was pretty clear. After around 4 hours of backing up, upgrading, jailbreaking, restoring, tweaking settings and finalising I have finally got my fuly functional iPod back and I have to say I am mightily impressed. Let me just go through some of the features:

1. iMessage – BlackBerry Messenger Rival (Finally I have something to knock down BBM and be proud of)

2. Wireless Sync – Does what it says on the tin, wirelessly sync with iTunes

3. None-Lockout Sync – You can still use your iPhone, iPod & iPad whilst sync

4. Reminders – A simple To-Do list app built in

5. Twitter Intergration – Does what it says, you can Tweet from Safari, Photos & and any other native Apple application (developer API’s coming soon to build into other apps)

6. Newsstand  – Save the forests! Get your magazines delivered straight to your News folder.

7. Game center – A bunch of improvements, including profile pictures.

8. Photos – You can delete and create photo albums on the device itself

9. Music – You can delete music on the device

10. Wireless Activation – Instead of the ‘Plug Into iTunes’ screen you get a friendly ‘Slide To Set Up’ prompt to activate your iDevice. Steve included this feature as part of the Post-PC era (no more standard computers)

11. FaceTime – Now over 3G networks

12. Notification Center – Finally! No more blue popups! The noticifations silently appear on the top of the screen and wil dissapear unless you click them. If you dont, they remain in the notification center so you know which ones you haven’t checked. The center can be acessed by swiping down from the top of the screen (it also includes weather and stock widgets). Also, the notifications you get whilst you device is off the put on the lock screen and can be chacked by swiping the icon on the lockscreen to the right.

13. iCloud! MobileMe is dead, according to Steve Jobs and I’m glad it is! With iClud you can get 5GB of free storage, backup (for non iTunes users who still want to backup their devices), a free @me.com account, photo storage, document storage, settings storage, contacts and calander. There are pictures below that will show you some of the features graphically.

14. Camera – How many times have you missed that moment because you had yo put in your passcode? Well no longer! When you double tap the home button on the lock screen the ‘Slide To Unlock’ bar shoretens and reveals a camera button that you can use to quickly take pictures. The volume-up button can now be used also for taking photos instead of touch-only.

There are over 200+ new features in the software (suprisingly it’s only an extra 52mb for the iDevice) so I won’t go indepth but, to all those non-apple users out there, it may be a good time to get yourselves into your local store! For all who want to contact me I would request that you use my new email for test purposes on: alexholyoake@me.com
